Arthur's Spring Film Festival

  • Arthur's Cinema 52 Erris Street Cromwell, OTA, 9310 New Zealand (map)

STRAY: [This Friday 5 October 4.00pm $20, includes film, drinks & discussion] Won best actor Moscow Film Festival making history by becoming the first New Zealand feature film selected for the world’s second oldest film festival in Moscow. Powerful and pensive NZ film debut from Dustin Feneley. Arthur's are delighted to start their Spring Film Festival with a fantastic Q&A featuring Dustin Feneley in person in their theatre. Best you don't delay for this as there is only a limited number of tickets left.

SHE SHEARS:[ Saturday 20 October & Friday 2 November. 7.30pm] Debuted at the NZIFF. First-time NZ documentary director James Nicol shows he’s a gifted filmmaker. He gives the back-breaking competition a magical quality without deflecting from the skill and strength of the female competitors. Yes, the women are competing in a male-dominated field, but this film never makes the story about the men nor measures the genders against each other. It’s a celebration of women at the top of their sport.

ZAMA: { Tuesday 30 October & Friday 9 November, 7.30pm] Multiple Argentine awards. Sophisticated period piece with elements of Werner Herzog, Kafka and Don Quixote. Zama is going incontrovertibly insane. But trapped inside the cascading absurdities of colonisation, no one can even tell.

SHOPLIFTERS:[ From Friday 23 November, 7.30pm] Palme d’Or Cannes. This drama, from Japanese cinematic artist Kore-eda Hirokazu, is a meditation on how we connect with others and what defines family. Low key and soulful.
