We have developed an investment approach that we believe will help us to achieve our vision. We aim to preserve capital and maximise the funding available for granting, subject to a prudent level of portfolio risk.

The Trust fund was created when the Otago Central Electric Power Trust bestowed Central Lakes Trust with assets, then valued at $155 million in November 2000.

One of the Trust’s primary objectives is to grow its capital base so that funds are available in perpetuity for the benefit of future generations.

Central Lakes Trust is proud to own a 100% shareholding in Pioneer Energy. This investment comprises approximately 35% of Central Lakes Trust’s portfolio.

Pioneer Energy’s business now includes multiple hydro and wind generation sites, energy solutions and retail of electricity across New Zealand. Pioneer is governed by an independent board of directors and its net valuation is currently $126.1m.

Pioneer pays an annual dividend to the Trust, which assists Central Lakes Trust in providing valuable financial support to community initiatives. For more information about Pioneer Energy follow the link: pioneerenergy.co.nz

The remainder of the Trust's investments are made up of a diversified portfolio which includes a range of national and international investments, in three asset classes:

  • growth assets (Australasian shares, global shares, property and private equity);

  • alternative assets (primarily global infrastructure investments);

  • and income assets (NZ bonds, cash and housing loans);

together valued at $459 milllion at 31 March 2023.
